Expenses: January 2017

Expense report!  Since I’m a total voyeur for finance, these types of details are exactly the kind that I love to read on other people’s blogs.

Don’t get me wrong though, these numbers are primarily written for me and Mrs. Dragon.  Every good FIRE breather knows that to be successful, you have to track your expenses. You have to track them like you track sands through the hourglass.

How else will you know when your Hoard is big enough?

Without further ado, here are the numbers for January (rounded to the nearest dollar):

Mortgage: $710

Groceries: $439

Utilities (electric, gas, water, sewer, trash, internet): $285

Cell phones: $23

Netflix: $11

Gym: $8

Restaurants/fast food/bars: $73

Insurances (car, personal property, life, dental): $288

Gas/Car: $98

Home improvement/maintenance: $2,612

Travel: $0

Healthcare: $150

Entertainment: $0

Hobbies: $7

Gifts/Charity: $10

Clothing/Shoes: $156

Daycare: $800

Baby stuff: $143

Goblins: $13

TOTAL: $5,826

The Goblins category is a catch-all for stuff that we don’t always spend money on.  All the little budget goblins that steal our money throughout the month.  This month it included mailing a package and an extra $10 because it’s been so long and we were traveling and I probably forgot something.

The big item on this list is the huge line item in the home category. The previous owners in our house took out a load-bearing wall and didn’t properly add additional support to make up for it. This was how much it cost to fix their mistake. Gotta love those previous owners!

Healthcare included a couple of therapy visits for Mrs. Dragon and a co-pay for an urgent care visit.

The clothing was a new jacket for Mrs. Dragon and some nursing bras.

That $800 in daycare represents four months of tuition. But it came out of our account in January so I’m including it here. It should balance out to something more reasonable when we look at 2017 as a whole.

Lastly, the baby stuff includes some babysitting and sundry other items. Diapers, breast pump stuff, some baby foods, etc.

If every month looked like this we would be in trouble! Luckily there are several big one-time expenses here and we’re hopeful that we can get our spending back in check as we head into 2017.
